Known as “the love stone,” rose quartz has been celebrated for centuries — and used as a conduit for healing and transformation in all matters of the heart. Here’s how you can draw on the powers of the pretty pink stone to bring more love, empathy, forgiveness, optimism, and passion into your life.
When you walk into a crystal shop for the first time — or peruse one online — it can be daunting. It’s literally as if everywhere you look, there’s another shiny object, each more mesmerizing than the next.
But metaphysical experts agree that if there’s one crystal you should take home, it’s rose quartz.
“For individuals just starting out with crystals, rose quartz is one of the best stones to begin with,” says Adora Winquist, author, alchemical healing expert, and founder of The Love Frequency, her yearlong Modern Alchemist certification program.
After all, “rose quartz is the stone that embodies the love frequency — and it’s a reminder that the love we see around us is truly the love from within us,” Winquist explains. “We are all on a journey from our minds to our hearts, and ultimately, it’s the depth and degree of the love and meaningful relationships in our lives that bring us the greatest fulfillment.”
And with meaningfully placed intentions, rose quartz crystals can help usher deep, significant bonds into our lives (more on this later). Known as the stone of love, rose quartz is reputed for opening and healing the heart chakra, says Gina Spriggs, creator of The Intuitive Crystal Connection course, master tarologist, and owner of Curio, Craft & Conjure.
One of our seven core energy centers, the heart chakra — which is located in the center of your chest — is the epicenter of connection, love, bonding, and relationships. When the heart chakra is in balance, feelings of self-love, forgiveness, and compassion for others abound. So whether you’re in search of love for yourself, love for another, or healing from a lost love, rose quartz can be a boon for you.
Rose Quartz: Its Meaning, Physical Properties, and Prevalence
Like its cousin clear quartz, rose quartz is primarily made of silicon and oxygen, says Spriggs. It gets its soft pink (and sometimes reddish) hue from trace amounts of three specific chemical elements: iron, titanium, and manganese.
Actually, rose quartz can range from a vivid pink (the most expensive variety, FYI) with a slight hint of blue to a subtle pink that can be confused for white, explains crystal therapist Michelle Melo. According to Melo, rose quartz is one of the most abundant types of crystals, and is primarily sourced in North America, India, Brazil, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. In the U.S. specifically, you can find the pretty pink rock in South Dakota, California, Georgia, Connecticut, and Maine.
Rose quartz has been revered since ancient times — and its use dates as far back as 600 BC, Spriggs says. “Archeologists discovered rose quartz in ancient Egyptian jewelry, amulets, and cosmetics. Ancient Egyptians believed that wearing rose quartz would help promote love, harmony, and healing in both relationships and in the afterlife. In fact, rose quartz artifacts have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, suggesting its significance in burial rituals and the journey to the afterlife.”
Melo adds that the ancient Romans and Greeks used the milky pink stone as a protective talisman, even believing that it had the power to slow aging (which, come to think of it, might be why there are so many rose quartz face-sculpting tools on the market). And early American cultures used rose quartz as amulets to dispel anger and bring in emotional balance.
Rose quartz primarily comes in two shapes: freeform (small rock to large boulder) and crystallized (small, multifaceted crystal clusters). The crystallized clusters are more rare and therefore are more expensive, Melo says.
However, rose quartz is also available in a variety of cuts, which influences how its energy is being directed. “For example, single-terminated stones are like lasers, directing energy in one direction, while double-terminated crystals allow for a flow of energy back and forth,” Spriggs explains. “Spheres are great for rooms, as they bathe the environment with their influence, while standing points, commonly used for crystal grids, direct energy up and out.”
So, is bigger better? Not exactly. Spriggs believes that the larger the stone, the more energy available, but quality is more important. (To ensure your stone is of the highest quality, Winquist suggests getting to know your supplier or crystal store owner.)
The most important thing to remember is that the effectiveness of the stone is dependent on your personal connection with it, Melo says. “You may prefer a small, rounded stone to carry in your pocket or a slim one to place under your pillow. If you are looking to enrich the energy of a larger space, a larger piece may be more suitable. There may be times when you feel more drawn to work with tower carvings, wands, or even clusters.” So when choosing a rose quartz, draw on both your intuition and logical mind to determine what size and shape will serve you best.

The Healing Benefits of Rose Quartz
Although there is little scientific evidence to support the efficacy of crystal healing, Spriggs says the reason so many of us are drawn to crystals is because they “emit specific vibrations that influence a person’s physical, emotional, or spiritual well-being. Each crystal is based on a stable geometric lattice (or crystal system) that influences humans (as well as animals and plants).”
It Can Promote Emotional Healing
Rose quartz, in particular, can be an incredibly positive influence on our minds and bodies, bringing us back to the tranquility of the natural world. “It’s an incredible stone for emotional release and emotional comfort,” Winquist says. “It can help take some of the compacted, depressed emotions that we all have, and coax them to the surface to be released.”
Because of rose quartz’s inherent soothing properties, it has a gentle way of helping us process difficult emotions and bring love to the forefront of our consciousness. This is an essential component of healing from our relationships with others and ourselves — and it makes way for new love to enter into our lives.
For this reason, Melo likes to recommend rose quartz to clients when they’re doing shadow work, working through grief or trauma, experiencing high anxiety, and even when beginning a meditation practice.
It Can Encourage More Positive Thinking
In addition to its profound emotional healing benefits, rose quartz can provide a level of healing on physical, mental, and spiritual levels, according to Spriggs. “Physically, it can help stabilize heart trauma and imbalances, helping the heart shift from stress-based to love-based physiology.”
Rose quartz benefits the mind by promoting positive thoughts and attitudes. “It is believed to replace negative thought patterns with more loving and optimistic perspectives,” Spriggs shares.
And spiritually, she says the stone helps move the heart toward love, bathing the mind and spirit in the healing, enlightened frequency and loving consciousness of all heart-centered spiritual masters.
Melo agrees: “I like to think of rose quartz as a balm to the soul. It guides us in trusting ourselves and others, rekindling hope and faith, and softening our emotions.”
It Can Help Manifest Love
Rose quartz can be an amazing ally in manifesting more love in your life, says Winquist. “Rose quartz is especially powerful when you’re manifesting love, with a focus on self-love. It reminds us that what we’re seeking isn’t out ‘there’ — it’s inside us — and we can visualize it having a magnetic effect on our cellular consciousness as well as our belief systems.” Upending limiting beliefs is a crucial part of manifesting our desires.
Adds Melo, “While rose quartz is not a crystal that is directly associated with manifestation (such as citrine or rutile quartz), it helps lay the groundwork for making space for abundance and positivity. When we allow love into our lives, we create a positive space that supports manifestation.”
How to Use Rose Quartz — And Where to Place It in Your Home
From carrying a stone in your purse to wearing a crystal bracelet or holding a chunk during meditation, there is no wrong way to use rose quartz. After all, it’s your intention that matters most.
And while setting your intention is simple — whether that’s for a new partnership to find you, to heal from a rough breakup, or simply to feel more compassion toward others — holding it takes conscious effort.
“Even though we can’t necessarily see the energy that comes off rose quartz, there are indeed waves of vibration and energy being emitted,” Winquist explains. The key is to envision that happening — i.e., visualize the positive energy of the rose quartz flowing to you — as you hold the intention that you’re receiving its loving energy.
With that in mind, here are some of our experts’ favorite ways to incorporate rose quartz into your daily life.
1. Wear a Rose Quartz Mala or Jewelry
Spriggs prefers to don a rose quartz mala (a strand of beads typically used during meditation) to remind herself of the importance of self-care. And Melo advises wearing a bracelet or other jewelry to help you achieve harmony, especially if you work in a high-stress environment.
2. Place It Under Your Pillow or Mattress, or on Your Bedside Table
Melo says doing so can help bring harmony, ease anxiety or stress, promote better sleep, and even enhance your sex life. Winquist places rose quartz on her nightstand, next to a photo of herself with her partner, and recommends putting a piece under your child’s bed or baby’s crib.
3. Carry It
Spriggs recommends placing rose quartz in your pocket, bag, or on your body while you’re grieving a loss. She also likes to wear it in her bra, since it’s close to her heart there.
4. Put a Piece in Your Den
“Placing a large rose quartz where your family or friends tend to hang out helps to maintain peace and harmony,” Melo says.
5. Use It to Enhance Your Meditation
Placing rose quartz on your heart can help deepen relaxation, according to Melo.
6. Add One Near Your Family Photos
“I love to put rose quartz there as a way of blessing my family,” Winquist says. It’s also a way to send your love and gratitude back to your ancestors.
7. Try It as a Gua Sha or Face Roller
While traditional gua sha is made of jade, Melo says the rose quartz version can help you integrate self-love into your beauty routine. She suggests adding a positive affirmation while you’re at it.
8. Place a Stone in Your Plants
“I place large rose quartz chunks in the plants in my bedroom to amplify its soothing effect in my sanctuary,” Spriggs says.
5 Powerful Rose Quartz Rituals
In addition to using rose quartz in your daily life, it can be especially potent to incorporate the love stone into rituals and practices. Here, our experts share some of their go-tos that enhance the healing process and lead to transformation.
1. Crystal Grid on the Body With Aromatics
If you’re experiencing a relationship that’s causing you great pain — maybe from the loss of a loved one — this is an especially powerful ritual, Winquist says. Anoint one or four pieces of rose quartz with your favorite essential oil. Lie down, breathe in the oil — because that’s where you’re making the connection between your sense of smell and your brain — and place the stone(s) on your body, either around your heart or in an area where there’s physical pain. If possible, listen to solfeggio frequencies (specific sound sounds that elicit a deeper state of healing and relaxation). Relax in this position for 20 to 45 minutes.
2. Rose Quartz Spray Bottle
Add a small piece of rose quartz to a spray bottle, fill it with water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil, and spray it around your home to help raise the vibration, Melo suggests. “I especially recommend focusing on corners and behind doors, all while saying an affirmation.” She also uses this spritz for her plants for an energy boost and in her hair as a reminder of self-love.
3. Heart Chakra Visualization
Lie down with a small rose quartz on your chest, Melo says. Imagine yourself surrounded by a pink light, almost like pink cotton candy. With each slow inhale, visualize a pink light going into your heart, and then exhale slowly. This will help release any stagnant energies or blockages in your heart center. Repeat until you feel a release.
4. Self-Love Bath
Prepare a bath with rose petals, lavender essential oil, rose quartz, and clear quartz (yes, add them directly to your bath water), per Melo. Soak in the water and relax, reciting the following affirmation: I am enough, exactly as I am. I am a channel for divine love and I move with compassion, empathy, and kindness.
5. New and Full Moon Intention Setting
If you’re trying to attract love into your life, write your intentions on a piece of paper during a new moon, Melo advises. Be specific about what you are trying to attract. Add the paper and a piece of rose quartz and clear quartz to a box. Close the box and keep it in a special place, such as at an altar in your room or on your dresser. You can revisit this note during the full moon or leave it there until your intentions are fulfilled.
On a full moon, Winquist says, amplify your intentions to receive more love by combining all of the elements: rose quartz crystal (the earth element), water, incense or a feather (air), and a candle (fire) in your altar. You can also choose to keep your journal, mala beads, etc., there.
How to Care for Your Rose Quartz Crystal
Every crystal, with few exceptions, should be cleansed, Melo shares. “Rose quartz is a crystal that needs to be cleansed regularly, especially if you work with it often.” Rose quartz can tolerate water cleansing without being damaged. Other options include smoke cleansing (such as by burning sage) or even sound cleansing, though Melo cautions against cleansing in direct sunlight, as this can fade the natural pink color — and that would be a travesty!
Spriggs, on the other hand, feels that your thoughts and intentions are all you need to cleanse and charge your stones. “Crystals have a stable geometric lattice, which can carry energy/information, whereas humans are constantly being influenced,” she explains. “Of the two, we need to be energetically ‘cleansed’ more than crystals do! I believe crystals should be communicated with to determine how they will help you — and this is what I consider ‘charging.’ However, if you feel the need to clean your rose quartz, simply put it in a pot of dirt overnight.”
Bringing More Love Into Your Life With Rose Quartz
The effects of integrating rose quartz into your life can be subtle or significant — and that depends on your involvement. It’s up to you to amplify these beautiful stones with your intention and then be open to receiving their loving energy. However, it’s good to note that crystals like rose quartz aren’t magic pills for all that ail us.
“The crystal is an ally, a guiding force on our journey of self-discovery. Just like the healer who walks with you to discover the healing potential that already exists within you, crystals can support you in bringing the energy of healing light, grace, and awakening within you,” Winquist says.
If you’re experiencing any health-related issues, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor or therapist for guidance.
Whether you’re seeking a new partner, more self-love, healing from heartbreak, or a more expanded loving consciousness full of compassion and empathy, rose quartz can be a conduit for transformation and personal growth.
