Astrology experts say the supermoon blue moon at the end of the month is a great opportunity to get clarity about what you want and let go of what no longer serves you.

An astronomical phenomenon is happening on August 30, 2023. Not only will there be a blue moon, but it will be a supermoon blue moon — so mark your calendars, pay attention to your intuition, make your moon water (recipe below!), and plan accordingly. DailyOM spoke with a professional astrologer to find out what this very rare supermoon means and how you can harness its energy to manifest your dreams.

While August might seem like just another low-key summer month, there’s plenty going on in the stars. On August 8, the Lion’s Gate Portal gave us a potent opportunity to fill our manifestation cups. And on August 16, the exquisitely named Black Moon Lilith formed a tight conjunction with the new moon in Leo, calling us to bring forth our true desires and liberate ourselves so we can live the life we actually want.

Meanwhile, we’ve got a Venus retrograde highlighting how we express ourselves in partnerships, and a Mercury retrograde taking hold on August 23. As if that’s not already enough, we’ll be gifted with a rare supermoon blue moon to close out this extraordinary cosmic month.

You’ve likely heard the phrase “once in a blue moon,” meaning that something happens not very often. For example, “My husband takes out the trash once in a blue moon” or “Once in a blue moon, I’ll order an espresso martini.” In the context of astronomy, a “blue moon” is most commonly used when there’s a second full moon within a single month. As you may recall, the first August supermoon, also known as the full Corn Moon or Sturgeon Moon, happened on August 1 and fell in the sign of Aquarius.

In addition to being catalysts of aha moments, full moons are good at bringing up big emotions.

The August 30 blue moon, which peaks at 9:36 p.m. ET, will be in Pisces and is “the closest, biggest, and brightest full supermoon of 2023,” according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. It is also the only blue moon in 2023, making it extra special. The next time we’ll have a closer full moon in relation to Earth will be November 5, 2025.

Here, astrologer Maisy Bristol breaks down exactly how the August supermoon blue moon will make an impact on your life based on your astrological sign — and what you can take away from this truly unique event.

How Will the August Supermoon Blue Moon Affect You?

While new moons signify the beginning of a cycle and push us into the new and the unknown, full moons allow us to “cut loose any old paths or baggage,” Bristol tells DailyOM. So whether it’s letting go of an old shirt, an outdated belief, a lackluster job, or a relationship that’s not aligned with your wants and needs, this full moon could be the inspiration you need to let go of what’s draining your energy — ultimately leaving you with more room to be in your power and experience joy.

Because August has two full moons, the August 30 supermoon builds upon the energy of the August 1 supermoon by reminding us, “Even though that was harsh, I’m now understanding how I feel and how you feel so I can continue to let go with peace,” Bristol explains.

Around the time of the full moon, you might finally gain insight into your emotions and know what you need to do to move forward and be the most liberated, authentic version of yourself.

“Full moons typically offer moments of extreme clarity, because the sun (your identity) starkly lights up the moon (your emotions),” notes Bristol.

Another important thing to note about the August 30 full moon is that it falls in Pisces, “a sign that embodies empathy, intuition, and spirituality,” Bristol explains. “And because this supermoon is following the logical (and potentially even cold) energy of the Aquarius supermoon on August 1, this blue supermoon grants us the empathy we need to find acceptance with whatever we let go of at the beginning of the month.”

And thanks to this supermoon making a loose conjunction (when two planets are approximately more than 8–10 degrees apart in the sky) with Saturn, the planet of structure and fears, we’re also gifted with an innovative, positive way of looking at a “scary” path forward. “It helps us trust any intuitive messages that come through,” says Bristol.

In addition to being catalysts of aha moments, full moons are good at bringing up big emotions. “In general, full moons are like energetic shocks to the system,” explains Bristol. “And when you add in the energy of a supermoon — a moon that is geographically closer to the Earth and can appear up to 14 percent bigger in the sky — imagine that the emotions and the drama can get significantly bigger as well.”

These heightened emotions and clarity can inspire deep emotional growth. But remember, although expansion is thrilling, you need moments of introspection to stay balanced and experience true growth. So give yourself some extra love and tenderness wherever and whenever you can this month.

What the August 30 Supermoon Means for Your Sign

If you’re wondering how the supermoon blue moon on August 30 will specifically affect you, Bristol advises reading your sun and rising signs for a more accurate picture. Your rising sign is your motivation for living life, while the sun is your identity and where you shine.

Aries

A mental health matter or personal secret that you’ve been keeping from yourself may be revealed to you. Be kind to yourself, spend time alone, and accept the messages that come through.

Taurus

This full moon is in your house of community (FYI, there are 12 houses in your birth chart and each represents a different area of your life). So, it might illuminate just how integral you are to the lives of those around you — as well as how emotionally in tune you are with them. Suddenly, you might feel empathy toward more outlier figures in your life, like your neighbor or a friend you haven’t seen in a long time.

Gemini

Something is revealed to you with regard to your career or work life, thanks to the full moon in your tenth house. And whatever it is — whether it’s that this isn’t the right job for you or that you need to work harder — might be pushing something you’ve known all along.

Cancer

With this supermoon in your house of expansion and travel, you’re suddenly realizing a topic that you’re passionate about and want to pursue. Maybe you never felt like it was the “right time” to travel or go to school or pursue this passion. But now, you’re understanding that you have the power to make this decision.

Leo

As it’s happening in your house of debts and finances, this full moon might help you understand where you’ve turned a blind eye to some of your money obligations. It’s a good time to settle up on those credit cards and invoices!

Virgo

A full moon in your house of long-term partnership means that you’re suddenly understanding ways in which you’ve been too hard on your partner. It’s the perfect time to view things from their point of view.

Libra

Pisces is all about our spiritual and emotional well-being. With a full moon in the house of physical health, it’s an optimal time to look into therapy programs, switch therapists, release health patterns that may no longer serve you, and take care of yourself — whether that’s taking a break from drinking or finding time to meditate when life gets stressful.

Scorpio

The Pisces full moon falls in your house of friends and dating, helping you find closure from the end of a friendship or relationship (possibly even one that ended during the August 1 full moon). This moon can also help you find your authentic self again.

Sagittarius

While Pisces is about daydreaming, it also tends to carry psychological trauma or baggage. With the full moon occurring in your house of family, it’s the perfect time to find personal closure with any lingering family wounds.

Capricorn

This full moon occurs in your house of communication, which, thanks to Pisces energy, gives a softness to your words. If you have to let someone down or let someone go, you’ll be able to handle that with care. Additionally, this full moon gives you streamlined access to your intuition, since this house is about mental clarity. So listen up for any intuitive nudges!

Aquarius

The Pisces full moon is in your house of self-worth and material things, allowing you to view possessions from a spiritual standpoint. It’s a perfect time to “Marie Kondo” your closet because you’ll have the truest ability to assess which items bring you joy.

Pisces

In your house of identity, this full moon asks you to release any outdated ways of thinking about yourself. An intuitive feeling about who you are now is likely to surface, and may prompt you to act on that clarity, so keep your eyes peeled!

What Are Helpful Rituals to Practice During the August Blue Moon?

This particular full moon is in the water sign Pisces, so a water-based ritual would be most appropriate. “This ritual can allow us to find closure and trust our intuition,” says Bristol. Below, she teaches us how and why to make moon water.

You can make moon water for any full moon, but doing so under a water sign supermoon might be particularly effective. Moon water is created to essentially “capture” the energy of the full moon and offers an extra boost of that energy when you need it most. In the case of a Pisces full moon, moon water would capture the will to follow your gut. Drink it anytime you need an intuitive message to come through.

How to Make Moon Water for the August Blue Moon

  1. Get a jar (any jar!).
  2. Fill with water (any water!).
  3. Add crystals or herbs to the water to enhance or focus on the kind of energy you’re seeking from the full moon. If you’re hoping to deepen your intuition, for example, amethyst or mugwort would be great additions.
  4. Leave the jar out overnight to “charge” under the light of the full moon.
  5. Store in a protected area and drink it when you need an intuitive message.

Along with your energy-boosting moon water, Bristol offers these mantras to say out loud (or repeat silently) during this moon-charged time of the year:

  • I can always trust my intuition.
  • I am connected to, and empathize with, everyone and everything around me.
